Distance China-Norway Art Exhibition
Pen Feng
The works of Alfred Vaagsvold’s abstract painting focuses directly on nature and frankly reflects it, thereby casting off the individualist and metaphysical haze of Modernism. His abstractions of subjects such as wind and waves seem rather close to us.
Christian Sunde. Sunde’s light-based installations and sculptures are not at all difficult to understand because, in this era of globalization, the visual experience of new technology is generally the same regardless of differences in cultural background.
Elin Høyland’s photography pushes us far away; the pieces show typical Norwegians and their surroundings. For Chinese people, these people and places are the stuff of distant legends.
Gao Xiang’s work make us recall the astrology of the Han Dynasty and the terracotta warriors of the Qin Dynasty. However, Gao Xiang’s work expresses the spiritual yearning of contemporary people, a yearning for a link between secular individual life and sacred cultural tradition that gives that individual life a sublime spiritual dimension.
Li Xu’s work brings us to an even more distant, mythical era. Li Xu’s work reflects the ambiguous attitude that contemporary Chinese people have toward traditional culture; they both admire the greatness of tradition and mock its unreality.
Sun Xun’s works describe the lives and surroundings of contemporary people. On the surface, the works are based on close, realist observation. However, these works also reflect Sun Xun’s personal feelings and memories, which are intensely individual and private.
