Brave New World:Xia Guo Solo Exhibition

Curated by Dai Zhuoqun, Xia Guo’s Solo Exhibition, Brave New World, will be opened in the White Box art Museum in 798 at 3 pm on 9th of Dec, 2012. The exhibition presented young artist Xia Guo’s newly created 9 pieces of installation art, 2 paintings and 1 piece of art work.

Xia Guo born and grew in Xinjiang Aletai, who is a quiet, innovative, sharp and prospective artist. His creation has a continuously and thorough reflection for material itself in a nonmaterial era, by the combination from the neon and Led lights, with visible and invisible " vulture " form to show inconsistent objects. The artist shows a beautiful light temptation in the dark end of the channel, while audience will stay in a strong comparison between beauties and cruel, darkness and light, brave and retreat, warm and cold, tries to make us thinking through light. The theme of the exhibition “Brave New World ", named from Huxley's dystopian novel.” Brave " is a pun, it is beautiful, brave and bold when positive and obtrusive and blind when negative. Lighting can bring beautiful things, but maybe trap some time.

Xia Guo thought that art’s evolution had a clear context to the non material. From a materialized thing to the non material today, it was the inevitable outcome which was questioned and looking for new possibilities. As a kind of epistemology, the essence and concept of art is extended and therefore, we are approaching the essence of things and the concept itself.

In the recent works, Xia Guo heated the neon tube of glass products and made them to hanging noose, brain, bows and arrows, barbed wire, rope and other shapes, or cut and bored the wasted Apple computer screen, inserting colorful meteor shower tube. He was trying to search an art expressive possibility through an industrial aesthetics product, and also criticizing consumerism and reflecting the social reality. His works included highly geometry, repeated, against manual drawing, using semi-automatic mechanic to work. The painting needed to be flat, with the aid of mechanical force, gravity and paint its own tension, like working in a production line. They were machinery and numb, without any emotional color and retreated individual traces, and strongly abandon the subjective position of industrial aesthetic features.

A very special colorful LED light work" #07”, used spot light LED production which was commonly appeared in commercial space, directly printed the ancient Indian phrase " let your soul catch up " around, which could remote control, change color and light speed English letters. " Let your soul catch up” means “please go slow, let your soul keep up with your body ", seems clearly indicate anger of anti-human and criticizing industrial production way in the deep consciousness of the artist.
