Lighting the Future – Foreword for International Optical Media Exhibition
Curator: Gu Zhenqing
God said, let there be light, and there was light.
In the language of God, light is the first noun and is material related. Therefore, light becomes the first substance which relates to the spirit.
In the context of art, light is merely a media. Sun light and candle light allow visual art to enrich the spirit life of human being. After the Industrial Revolution, the light driven by electricity has changed thoroughly the old life style of man kind. Since then, the cities never sleep. Day and night serve no longer as restriction order to separate life from work for city dwellers. Lamp light and electronic light has, at the same time, pushed forward the imagination and creativity of artists. Man’s research on light has even led to the birth of photography and film.
During the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, light has came into sight of modern artists as an art media. Sun light, lamp light and various other lights, after being polished by artists, have induced different schools of art, as well as revolution movements in architectural and industrial design.
Now, at the time of globalization and with the rapid development of technology, light has been forged into a new media. This optical media has become the tool for artists’ enquiry into the new world, to help them recognize this ever-changing universe.
Light, illuminates the spirit and lights up the future.
